Lets Go Hiking In The Chuckanut Mountains
The Chuckanut Mountain Trails offer some of my favorite hiking because it can be done year round. Whether you want a change of pace in the winter or the trails on Mount Baker are still snowed in in the Spring, anytime is a great time to grab your hiking boots and maybe a couple of extra layers and get out a hike! Summer is when these trails really shine, rewarding your hard work with breathtaking views and stunning sunsets.
The Chuckanut Mountain Trails consist of some 8,000 acres of land and trails, leaving you plenty of new trails and old favorites to explore. Before you head out on your hike make sure you know where you are going, most of the trails intersect and you can start on one trail and end up on a different one. There are so many options to choose from, here are two of my favorites. Keep Calm and Hike On!
Pine and Cedar Lakes
Great training hike for longer more difficult hikes, you’ll most likely see hikers with large backpacks sweating it out up and down the steep grade. It’s a 5 mile round trip with views of the San Juan Islands from the top, on a sunny day. There are several options on this trail, you can even camp in a couple places around the lake. Great for even a week night hike since it’s pretty quick. Parking is hidden, make sure you don’t leave any valuables in your car. More information here:
A fun although sometimes strenuous hike, starting with switchbacks it leads you through new growth forest. The 6.5 miles round trip rewards you after 1 mile with a bench and view of the San Juan Islands, this is just a taste of what awaits you at the top. Keep going! This trail can get slippery and muddy for sections if it’s been raining, take your time while scrambling through it. The view at the top is incredible and well worth your time and effort. Pack yourself a picnic and pat yourself on the back for a hike well climbed. More information here:
