Favorite Restaurants-The Fork at Agate Bay

For Breakfast:The Fork at Agate bay serves breakfast between 8am-2pm and is well worth the scenic drive out on the North Shore of lake Whatcom. With locally Sourced ingredients they offer not only delicious dishes but with great atmosphere as well.  If you are in the mood for something sweet, savory or healthy they have a great menu selection with prices between 6-15 dollars for a meal.

Budget friendly and fun:Go directly to the source. Have a day outing to Taylor Shellfish Farm on Chuckanut Drive. Bring your own table cloth, plates, silverware and picnic sides. Purchase fresh oysters in the little farm store, spread out your feast on the picnic tables around back overlooking Samish Bay, and barbecue them on the spot.

Budget Friendly and Atmospheric:The Black Cat in Fairhaven has atmosphere in abundance and with plates ranging from 10-28 dollars it’s very easy to stay on a budget.  In fact you could make a meal to share out of their delicious starter menu with cheese fondue and seafood.  It is also one of the few places to eat in Fairhaven that actually offers a view!

Best Happy Hour:The Temple bar has been voted Bellingham’s best Happy Hour the past four years in a row. It could have something to do with it’s hours. Happy Hour runs 11 am to 7 pm every day, and Sunday 3pm to close. Enjoy a bottle of wine with your choice of: a little cheese plate, landjaegar with dijions and cornichons, or a little savory vegan plate for just $18. I am a sucker for atmosphere and this place is snug and intimate with dark wood and lots of candle light.

Modest Budget: Rock n’ Rye Oyster House is the new kid on the block, but you would never know it since they were previously known as the oyster bar at Bayou On The Bay. In the historic Herald building they occupy a much larger but still narrow space that they have put to good use. Romantic and casual the food will be sure to wow you along with their unique cocktail menu.  Oysters not your thing? Don’t worry their menu offers a variety of locally sourced dishes with a new special every week.

Five Star: The Oyster Bar is Pacific NW fine dining at it’s best. Plus you get the gorgeous scenic drive of Chuckanut.  Though called the Oyster bar it too has a menu that offers a variety of dishes and beautiful views of Samish bay at intimate candle lit tables. Not only is the food gourmet but it’s the little extras that really elevate this to a special dining experience. Every entre is served with fresh baked bread (yes it come out to you HOT) a small pallet cleanser of house made sorbet and champagne and with dinner a side of seasonal vegetable and a melt in your mouth soufflé, I have dreams about that Soufflé. It is also good to note that they do not usually seat children under the age of 9 unless the down stairs is unoccupied. While I prefer to dress a little nicer for this restaurant we are in the PNW so don’t be surprised to see very casually dressed people there as well.

Walk in the Park:  Boulevard Park is usually the obvious choice for locals. It’s a long flat park that boarders Bellingham bay and thanks to some new landscaping by the city it even has some beach access.  It is a beautiful place to watch the sun set across the bay. You can even walk the trail that leads all the way into Fairhaven. One of the best things about Blvd on a winter’s day is the Woods Café that is in the middle of the park. You can go inside and sit next to the fireplace with a coffee or hot cider and a view of the bay. Or use the outside walk up window to order and take get it to-go to warm you on your walk.

One, The Syre center, is used mainly for school tours and is not always open to the public. From historic exhibits to art exhibits the Old City Hall and Lightcatcher Museums are a great walk-through. Full of local art and history.
